Production ATS? spotted

January 27, 2011 - 10:08 am

XTS Spy ShotAutoblog has spotted what they are calling the new XTS sedan undergoing testing. However, with the bobbed rear overhang as well as a decidedly not-front drive front overhang, and a small sedan rear door size – we’re calling this the ATS. Thanks to 60Seville for pointing out the discrepancies.

Some are noting the tail lights are not Cadillac issue – however, most GM prototypes for the last several years typically sport non-brand lights during this stage of testing.

Cadillac and GM Design win 2010 LA Auto Show Design Challenge

January 24, 2011 - 2:00 pm

See all the images of the Aera Concept at in the CaddyEdge Image galleries.

AeraGM Design won their third LA Auto Show Design Challenge (3 victories in 7 years of the contest) with the Cadillac Aera concept – beating out the likes of Mercedes, Honda, Nissan, Toyota, and Maybach. They tied this year with the entry from Smart.

The contest this year asked the design teams to envision the 1000 lb car. Designs had to accommodate seating for four while maintaining a comfort, design, safety, and performance.

Aera was envisioned to be powered by 10000 psi compressed air stored in a compressed air tank providing 1000 miles of range.

Structure is comprised of a 3D lattice structure inspired by nature.

Wheels consist of an all-in-one design that marries propulsion, suspension, and steering into one component.

The concept was conceived in GM’s North Hollywood Advanced Design Studio by Frank Saucedo, director; Phil Tanioka, vehicle designer; Brent Wickham, concept strategist; Shawn Moghadam, layout designer and Timonen, the project manager.

Could Cadillac’s Flagship be a mid-engined supercar?

January 20, 2011 - 1:00 pm

CienRemember the Cien? The V-12 powered monster that Cadillac put on the show stands some years ago?

It supposedly served as the inspiration for what became our current CTS Coupe – but Car and Driver are hearing that it might not be as dead as we all expected.

While we have been expecting a 7-series/S-class fighter to slot ahead of the upcoming, unannounced XTS – there are apparently some in GM that would like to see a true supercar in the mold of the Cien make it to production.

This seems fairly unlikely, but I certainly see no reason to believe that uber-Sedan and a matching super sports car couldn’t both be on the way. The S-Class certainly doesn’t keep Mercedes from building the gull-winged SLS and even the CL 4-seat mega-coupe.

We’ll see, I suppose.
