Provoq confirmed as SRX replacement

January 23, 2008 - 10:01 am

x08cc ca042As if we didn’t suspect this already – Automotive News is reporting an interview with Cadillac head Jim Taylor that the Provoq will see production (in gas powered form, of course) in 2009 as the spiritual successor to the SRX.

Sales goals for the new crossover (based on GM’s ‘premium Theta’ platform) are 60-70k units per year. This compares to the 20k units the SRX sells per year.

For those who liked the SRX’s sporty bent and wouldn’t be caught dead in one of these ‘crossover/SUV-ish’ things…Cadillac will have your number with the CTS sport wagon that should hit the market about the same time as the CTS coupe (i.e. 2010 model year).

More spy shots of the upcoming BRX/BTX small crossover

January 18, 2008 - 10:01 am

AutoBlog BRX SpyshotAutoblog has posted a series of new spy shots of what we’ve been expecting to be the new small crossover from Cadillac (thought to be either the BTX or BRX).

Giving the styling hints given by the Provoq concept – I’m starting to doubt that this is the Cadillac crossover (or that Cadillac is being pretty inconsistent in their styling theme on the production version vs. the concept). For example, the ‘side window graphic’ in designer-speak is completely different. Check out the trailing edge of the rear door window shape, especially how it meets the C-pillar. The spy shots show a BMW-esque kick-forward while the concept was much more consistent with the CTS/CTS coupe with a taper from roof to body that is unbroken.

x08cc ca035The headlights seem to wrap into the fender, as in the Provoq – but given that even Chevrolet and Saturn are using similar themes – that doesn’t tell us much.

The lower grill/running-light area and the front to back rising character line on the spy shots are the only things I think match the Provoq.

I guess we’ll see in the next year which brand this little crossover belongs to.

Cadillac Provoq crossover concept

January 7, 2008 - 11:01 pm

Update: Check out all our Provoq photos – in wallpaper size – in the Provoq Gallery

x08cc ca035Today, GM will debut the Cadillac version of their E-Flex series hybrid, the Provoq crossover concept. The debut will occur during GM President Rick Wagoner’s speech during CES.

As expected this is a version of the E-Flex system that uses a hydrogen fuel-cell as the ‘range extender’ and has, as its only emission, water. Intentionally or not, this also looks like it could preview the styling of the upcoming ‘BTX’ crossover that Cadillac is expected to be putting into production in the future.

Other interesting details of the Provoq include:

•Cadillac styling inside and out. CTS-inspired headlights and neon taillights. Cut and sew interior treatment also similar to the CTS with a nav/multi-function screen that rises out of the center stack.
•21” wheels with Michelin Green-X low-rolling resistance tires.
•Total range of 300 miles (20 miles on initial Li-Ion battery charge / 280 miles by electricity from fuel-cell)
•Dual 10,000 psi hydrogen tanks storing a maximum of 13.2 pounds of hydrogen under the rear cargo floor
•9kWh total energy capacity of the Li-Ion battery pack
•88kW continuous output of fuel cell and 60kW peak power output from Li-Ion battery pack
•All-wheel drive via single 70kW front and dual 40kW rear motors (rears are hub motors)
•0-60mph of 8.5 seconds with 100mph top speed
•Solar panel integrated in the roof to power interior accessories
•Brake-by-wire with regenerative braking (converts motion directly back into electricity to extend range)
•Active grille louvers that maximize aerodynamics while still providing adequate fuel cell cooling
•Full-underbody panel to maximize aerodynamic efficiency
Saab 9-4x conceptUPDATE: Given the striking similarities to leaked leaked images at Autoblog of the BTX’s platform-mate, the Saab 9-4x BioPower concept – we’re willing to call the Provoq what it is…a thinly veiled styling preview of the BTX (or BRX, or whatever it ends up being called) – Dimensions that line-up exactly with the theta crossovers (the exeption being that wheelbase is longer than that of that of the Chevrolet Equinox and much more than the Saturn Vue’s – in keeping with the upgrade of the Theta platform for Cadillac duty – though this may simply be coincidence due to Cadillac wanting to show a crossover body-style for this concept and Theta being about the right size rather than any sneak-peak of the rumored BTX).

BRX Speculation

November 27, 2007 - 8:00 pm

2009 Cadillac BRXConsumer Auto Guide is known for their low-budget magazines showing ‘spy shots’ and lousy sketches has an interesting page with a not-awful computer rendering of what the new BRX might look like (though it is obviously an STS front end grafted onto a Pontiac Torrent body).
