Will MPG requirements hurt the future of Cadillac

August 21, 2008 - 2:54 pm

With rising gas prices and increases in CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) standards set to take effect in the coming decade, the future of Cadillac’s products is in doubt.

Rumors are swirling that the STS/DTS replacement (both cars were to be replaced with a single uber-model to compete against BMW’s 7-series and Mercedes S-Class), expected to be built on a premium version of GM’s new Zeta rear-drive chassis, has been canceled. The next Escalade is up in the air. Smaller products are being considered that might never have been before.

This casts doubt onto the direction Cadillac might take in the future. Will they continue on their quest to go toe-to-toe with the luxury industry heavyweights model for model (and with the new regulatory climate, what does that mean)? Will they dial back their ambition and compete with the second tier of the luxury market? Will they find their own, distinctive, path?

Let’s take a look at what will and might happen at Cadillac in the near future:

More CTS coupe goodness

March 20, 2008 - 10:44 am

A couple sources have posted more info on the upcoming CTS coupe.

Winding Road has posted a series of new spy photos. However the article doesn’t really reveal any new tidbits.

Winding Road: Spied! Cadillac CTS Coupe Follows Concept Form

LeftLaneNews.com has posted some details of their interview with Cadillac head, Jim Taylor.

Of note – we won’t have to wait for a V-Series version. Both the standard coupe and the V-series coupe will debut simultaneously.

A diesel coupe will likely be available in Europe (and possibly the US, depending on demand).

Another tidbit from the article are further confirmation that the STS/DTS will be replaced by a single model in the coming years (2011-12). Interestingly, it appears that Cadillac has realized that they can’t just move the CTS into STS price territory overnight, and the STS/DTS replacement will continue in the current 5-Series/E-Class price range while aiming for the 7-Series/S-Class in size and features.

Yet more information is that Cadillac may be a likely place for passenger car diesels, as the Cadillac price point can more easily absorb the cost of modern/clean diesel engines.

Right-hand drive STS goes on sale in UK

February 28, 2008 - 3:30 pm

Since our friends in the UK still insist on driving on the ‘wrong’ side of the road…it makes selling US built cars there difficult.

08 STSHowever, Cadillac’s commitment to their market has lead them to make ‘right-hand drive’ versions of all their sedans – the final one to make the switch is the STS. Now, all the Cadillac sedans (STS, CTS, BLS) aren’t being handicapped by requiring UK buyers to drive on what they think of as the ‘wrong’ side of the car.

This should help boost sales and ultimately get Cadillac closer to their European sales goals.

Well, duh - Cadillac still planning on large, rear-drive sedan

February 22, 2008 - 4:54 pm

The Car Connection has posted that they are hearing that Cadillac will be getting a version of the Zeta rear-drive architecture as a replacement for the STS and DTS in the not too distant future (2010-11 model year).

The only reason this is news is due to recent decisions by GM to cancel other Zeta-based cars due to the future CAFE standards that go into effect in 2020.

This will leave GM with only the new Camaro, the G8 sedan for Pontiac, a large Buick, and the new top Cadillac as the only US versions of the Australian designed and built Zeta.

Expect the Cadillac version to be powered by turbocharged and direct injected V-6 engines with both rear and all-wheel drive and to be priced competitively with the BMW 7-Series and Mercedes S-Class.
