Today’s news about future Cadillac product

July 30, 2007 - 9:25 am

Automotive News has managed to get a lot of auto blogs buzzing about the future of Cadillac.

Cadillac CrestThey are repeating what has been said for a while that a new small, rear-drive sedan is on the way, a small SUV is coming too (BRX), that the SRX is likely to be dropped, the DTS/STS are going to be merged.

However, they really botch their projected new lineup by saying the STS/DTS replacement will compete against the 5-series. This doesn’t make a lick of sense since rumors up to this point all point to the CTS moving up-market, the alpha-based BLS taking the CTS’ place as the 3-series competitor, and the STS/DTS replacement going after the BMW 7-series/Mercedes S-Class.

At this point, I think the only real question is if the SRX will get a more SUV-esque replacement with the CTS wagon taking the car-like, mid-sized utility segment or if the SRX will just go away altogether.

We should start to get some more concrete news out of Cadillac in the next year or so (since the rumored product should debut as 2010-2012 model year.

NHTSA investigation of STS and CTS differential failures

July 26, 2007 - 2:21 pm

Consumer Affairs is reporting that the United States National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is opening an investigation into reported differential failures in 2003-2006 CTS and 2005-2006 STS models. Interestingly, the SRX, which, at least in rear-drive form, should be using the same rear differential is not being investigated.

There are 20 reports from owners of rear differential failures, including 9 that resulted in loss of vehicle control. The reported failures occurred at as few as 3400 miles.

An investigation would be the first step toward a recall – though many investigations result in no further action. A recall could impact over 350000 cars.

CTS makes Forbes list of low-cost luxury cars

July 6, 2007 - 8:31 am

forbes 1As much as I loathe posting about any Forbes list (they seem to put out multiple lists every day, just for the publicity)...this one has at least a slight Cadillac angle…

They are running a story about the wide range of ‘affordable’ luxury models available.

One interesting angle is how the CTS is one of a select few on the list that don’t share a platform with a lesser model from another brand. This makes the CTS one of the few ‘true luxury’ models on the list.

As you know, the CTS is based on a unique platform (Sigma) that Cadillac and Cadillac alone uses for models as diverse as the CTS, STS, and SRX.

The only other models on the list that share this distinction (not sharing their innards with more mass-market cars) are:

BMW 3-series
Infiniti G37
Lexus IS
Mercedes C-class

A nice group to be part of, I think.

The ones that do share their roots with ‘lesser’ cars on the Forbes list are:

Lutz speaks - Sixteen-based production car is off for good

July 6, 2007 - 8:13 am

In a blog post over at GM’s official Fastlane blog, Bob Lutz has confirmed that pending CAFE (the law of the land for new vehicle fuel economy) has officially killed chances of a near-term uber-Cadillac sedan like the Sixteen concept.

SixteenThis (as well as consumer demand for higher fuel efficiency) is also a reason behind the recent decision by Cadillac to consider offering a hybrid version of most of their cars and trucks.

I’m sure Cadillac will consider a return to a Sixteen-level car if the Lexus LS600 hybrid flagship sedan is successful. However, they may build it at a slightly lower price point on their upcoming 7-series/S-class competitor that will replace the STS and DTS.

See the video of Lutz talking about concept cars of the past few years and what they plan to do about each at:
