Actually, I would wonder if BMW and Mercedes will be able to keep their larger gas engines in the US market either once a 35mpg fleet average is expected.
Of course, everyone could offset by adding smaller engines and smaller models to offset the big engines.
I think GM is pretty well positioned to take advantage of this since the volume of high-mileage vehicles should be quite large compared to BMW’s Mini and Mercedes’ Smart…though GM does also have a lot of large trucks and SUVs to offset as well.
Care to comment?

There will have to be a larger engine available for anyone to consider this a true s-class competitor. I’m guessing you’ll be able to get the DOHC 6.2 VVT V8 that was leaked in the UAW document a while back. CAFE might have forced them to make this motor an expensive option but I really don’t think GM is dumb enough to offer this car with only V6 options.
